Harry S. Truman: Two Related 1¼" Slogan Buttons. These buttons came out of the St. Louis area, and although unmarked, are St. Louis Button Co. issues. An example of the "Harry is Sorry", which shows up from time to time, recently appeared at auction on the original St. Louis Button card (it fetched $336). We have not encountered the Darst variety before, but its Missouri associations can be established:
St. Louis attorney and former Congressman Thomas C. Hennings, Jr. seemed the consensus choice as the 1950 Senate nominee to take on Republican incumbent Forrest Donnell. However, without warning, Truman announced his support for Emery Allison, the rather plodding, cigar-smoking President Pro Tem of the Missouri State Senate, whose chief political attribute seemed to be a friendship with the political boss and Truman mentor Jim Pendergast. The endorsement immediately created a major rift in the state Democratic Party. Governor Forrest Smith and St. Louis Mayor Joe Darst chose to support Allison out of loyalty to Truman. (As Darst put it, "I ain't going to bite the hand that feeds me".) Despite arguments that defeating Hennings would be pounced on by the Republicans as a repudiation of Truman by his home state, the better qualified Hennings went on to win the primary and the general election. The slogan buttons offered here were undoubtedly released in the wake of that bitter primary. The only question is whether they were to indicate a sincere regret for going against the general will of the party, or sarcastic items put out by gleeful Hennings supporters. A great pair either way, and in choice condition.
