Harding & Coolidge: Extremely Rare and Important 1¼-inch Jugate. This iconic design is best known as one of the two most familiar designs for the jugates of the opposing Cox-Roosevelt ticket. Interestingly it did not make its first appearance in 1920, however. In 1912 the company produced a small number of one-day-even Roosevelt-Johnson jugates which first employed this beautiful design.

Among 1920 issues, this 1¼" Harding-Coolidge version is actually significantly rarer that the 7/8" Cox-Roosevelt, with perhaps a half dozen examples known (a single Cox-Roosevelt is known in the 1¼" size, now in the Cox family collection, and interestingly no 7/8" version of the Harding-Coolidge has appeared. It is presumed that all were manufacturer's samples, never ordered in quantity). A well-known hobby auction recently sold and example of this Harding-Coolidge for $29,601, doubtless a record for a non-Cox-Roosevelt jugate until Heritage's sale of a rare 2¼" variety for $35,000 in the first Berman Collection auction.

Except for some tearing of the back paper, the present example displays beautifully. For accuracy we note a single scratch extending from the edge at 2:30 diagonally across Coolidge's portrait, visible only when the light hits the surface at the right angle. Certainly one of the top pinback jugates in the Berman Collection.
