    Description

Grover Cleveland: 1896 Hopeful Button. 1¼" button that was issued at the "National Democratic Convention Chicago, Ill., July 7, 1896". It features a portrait of Cleveland titled "Democratic Doctrines" above an acrostic of three imps labeled "R E M" (Reliable Money, Equal Rights, Monroe Doctrine). We're not sure of the purpose of this button, as the country experienced an economic panic in 1893. Bryan emerged as the eventual nominee, but this button may have been worn by a Cleveland supporter, urging a third term for the incumbent President. Whitehead & Hoag back paper. Light foxing, mostly around the edges.
