DescriptionCox & Roosevelt: The Key Red, White, and Blue "Cox Roosevelt Club" Jugate, the Hake Book Plate Specimen. This 1" rarity is the only colorful variety of Cox & Roosevelt jugates, and as such particularly coveted by collectors. The Cox & Roosevelt is of course the "holy grail" of jugate buttons. Although various companies produced a total of six different designs, it is speculated that perhaps all were samples never ordered in quantity, as an aggregate total of only perhaps fifty copies exist in all varieties. Pinback jugate varieties (picturing both presidential and vice-presidential running mates) have been produced for every political ticket since the 1860 election and have always been aggressively collected in series. But because of the rarity of the Cox & Roosevelt, only a limited number of collectors can possibly accumulate a run.
The specimen offered here has a most distinguished provenance: It is from the legendary U.I. "Chick" Harris collection (the only Cox & Roosevelt jugate variety in that collection), and is the plate example from Ted Hakes' standard reference book for 1896-1972 buttons. Condition is excellent; several minor smudges of blue ink in the field, notably above Cox's head and FDR's right temple, occurred in manufacture and detract minimally. A very special opportunity for the advanced collector.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
