Cox & Roosevelt: An Almost Certainly Unique Black and White Variant of the Customarily Brown Whitehead and Hoag 7/8" Jugate.
It is a momentous occasion indeed when a never-before-seen Cox-Roosevelt jugate variety appears in the marketplace. In nearly fifty years we can recall only one such occurrence, when the 1 1/4" variety now in the Cox Broadcasting Collection was offered in a Leon Weisel auction decades ago (in one of the hobby's most famous incidents, that button, originally bought by Don Warner, brought over $30,000 in the early 1980s auction of his collection, with determined specialist Joe Jacobs ultimately outbidding no less a rival than Malcolm Forbes, Jr.).

The existence of this example was known only to a few hobby insiders, as it was hardly ever displayed. It surfaced in response to a Coin World buying ad in the 1970s placed by Sam Pressman. We picture both color variations here to emphasize the striking difference in appearance. While there will likely never be a definitive explanation, we theorize that the unique black and white version may well have been a sample issue. To us it seems surprising that the brown coloration may have been chosen over the black and white, as the images seem better defined and the overall appearance more pleasing on the black and white design.

The condition is unimprovable on this Pressman example, certainly the most important Cox-Roosevelt it has ever been our privilege to present.
