Charles Evan Hughes: Security, Justice, Harmony Trigate. This is certainly one of the best Hughes buttons produced in the 1916 election. This example, we believe, came from the Ed Veleber Collection and may be the only one in existence. For years, collectors hounded Ed to sell his example, but no one could cajole him to break it loose, tuck it away, or quote a "per inch" price. Titled "Hughes for President", it shows Hughes and his Republican predecessors, Teddy Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. The three G.O.P. stalwarts represent "Security Harmony [and] Justice" for the American voting public. Made by Bastian Brothers, it has some light spotting around the perimeter. It is perfectly centered with no cracks, splits, gouges or scrapes. The portraits are really bold with an intense black color. To the successful bidder, we offer a true Veleber-ism... "There you go, tiger!!"
