Road Repair on the California Stage Coach Line. This one-page letter, approximately 8" x 10", written from the "Office of Hawthorne and Bodie Stage Line", May 4, 1892, Del Monte [California], deals with repairs on the toll road to one of the most notorious mining towns in California history. The owner of the line, J. W. Hogan, sends a bill [not enclosed] to the assistant superintendent of the rail road company. He discusses work done by the "Forbes man" in fixing roads after the heavy rains of the previous year. Hogan hired "2 Indians and gave them a span horses to haul manure 2 days on road down this Del Monte Canon. I thought it the best & quickest way to cover up all the little solid rocks that stuck up in the wagon ruts." The letter is in excellent condition. This gives new meaning to the phrase "This road stinks!"
