Martin Van Buren & Andrew Jackson: Important Ambrotype of an 1839 "Union Must Be Preserved" Print. The original print was created by Jos. A. Arnold, Thomas Moore's Lithography, Boston, in 1839. It featured all the presidents up through Van Buren, with Van Buren and Jackson larger and more prominent. Below the "jugate" is Jacksons famous toast, "The Union Must Be Preserved." Ostensibly a tribute to the Declaration of Independence, the print had clear political overtones. It is reminiscent of an 1840 campaign print for Van Buren by Thayer, Moore's successor.

The sixth plate ambrotype is housed in a patriotic gutta percha Union case featuring patriotic motifs including a shield and the word "Union' on a streamer. The case bears an 1857 patent date, and it seems likely that this Ambrotype was created in the late 1850s, perhaps as a pocket piece, by a strong supporter of the theme it represents. Almost certainly unique, both ambro and case are in superb condition. One of the most interesting and significant historical photographic items we have been privileged to offer. 3.75" x 3.25" cased.
