    Description

Hoover & Curtis: Spectacular Jugate Tire Cover, the Mate to the FDR Version Also Offered in this Auction. Popular during the 1924-32 era, when many automobiles had rear-mounted spare tires, they were the much more dramatic forerunner of the ubiquitous bumper sticker. Although a number of different designs were made, this one and its Roosevelt mate seem to be the only jugates. We know of but one other surviving example of the Hoover-Curtis and to our belief the FDR-Garner is unique, (as confirmed by the owner of the other Hoover-Curtis, a longtime specialist in the best political display items). These covers are formed of two layers. The underlying layer is heavy canvas and this is covered by leather, or a leather-like material on which the design was printed. Not surprisingly a large majority of political tire covers are in rough condition owing to the way they were used - outdoors and exposed to the elements. This Hoover-Curtis example shows some minor surface cracking, with several tiny pieces of the black surface missing, (not affecting the portraits or slogans), but overall this one is in excellent condition, as the photo clearly shows. Featured together on p.168 of Running for President: The Candidates and Their Images, they are by any standard among the premier political display items. Since we began working with the Frent collection few items have been more asked about and eagerly anticipated.
