    Description

Henry Clay: A Rare and Colorful Political Brush with His Portrait. With many of the early three-dimensional items which pictured president and statesmen, it is difficult to determine whether the item was actually issued for campaign purposes. There is no such doubt about this beautiful brush, however. It is made of lovely birdseye maple. In the center of the wood top is an unusual decal portrait of Clay, one we have not seen on any other Clay item, with his name below and "Champion of the American System" above. Excellent overall condition. There is a little very minor bubbling of the decal surface, and one chip missing from the decal in an innocuous location below Clay's portrait. Attractive gold and red painted decoration. The brush portion itself appears to have seen little use. While similar brushes with handles appear from time to time picturing Harrison and Van Buren, this is the only example of this Clay brush which we have ever encountered. Another very special opportunity for the serious collector of early political display items. Measures 8.75" x 2.875" x 1.5" (including bristles).
