George and Martha Washington: Locket with Documented Hair Samples. Lockets of hair were considered important heirlooms and keepsakes in early America and perhaps none were considered as significant and valuable as those of General and Lady Washington. This teardrop-shaped locket contains a goodly amount of hair from each of those esteemed individuals. One side shows mostly blond or gray hair, the other mostly brown. Measuring .75" x 1.25" overall, it has a bow-top with beveled glass front and back. The bow has nine amethyst-color stones with a banner intertwined with white letters reading "De Mon Amille Gage". The documentation on this item indicates it was first given by Mrs. Tobias Lear to Admiral Storer (see photo of original presentation envelope). Lear was Washington's military and private secretary. Lear was Storer's brother-in-law. It descended in the Storer and Decatur Families. We do not recall seeing any similar relics of comparable stature or provenance.
