Allan Dudley Jones, an original vintage lifelike oil portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Virginia artist Allan Dudley Jones was a noted artist of his time. This impressive oil painting on canvas measures 27 x 36," and captures FDR's dynamic presence powerfully against a dark-blue patriotic background of stars and the outstretched wings of an American eagle. FDR's head alone measures a full 15 x 22," and is painted so that his eyes and presence bore into any observer! The canvas is on a wooden stretcher without any frame, and the painting is signed "A. D. Jones" on the verso of the canvas. Included with the painting is a 1980 handwritten letter signed by the artist on his letterhead, and with an enclosed brochure. In this letter Allan Dudley Jones describes why and when he painted this portrait of President Roosevelt, as a contribution to a World War II War Bond Drive. Jones also describes how the painting hung for a time in the lobby of the Paramount Movie Theatre in Newport News, Virginia. Allan Dudley Jones was born in 1915 in Hampton, Virginia, and educated at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He taught art at William and Mary College, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the University of Virginia, and elsewhere. He has painted several mural decorations in public buildings, and his Diorama of the Monitor and the Merrimac hangs in the Mariners' Museum of Newport News, Virginia. His works are also owned by the Virginia Museum of the Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Chrysler Museum of Norfolk, Virginia, the High Museum of Atlanta, Georgia, and elsewhere. A brochure describing these and many more professional attributes of the artist, illustrated with several of his paintings and sculptures, and a portrait of Allan Dudley Jones himself, accompanies FDR's portrait and the artist's 1980 letter of provenance. Quite an unusual historic and political work of art, by an important Virginia artist. Also included in this FDR Collection is a two volume set entitled The Road To Victory, edited by Major W. R. Wheeler and published in 1946. These two volumes tell the story of the great Hampton Roads, Virginia Port of Embarkation during World War II. Three master drawings by Allan Dudley Jones are in this set. Both frontispieces and one other master drawing are included, with beautiful colors and stirring paintings by Jones who was himself from Hampton, Virginia.
