David G. Burnet Document Signed Engraved Republic of Texas bond completed in manuscript, signed by Burnet on January 1, 1841, as President of the Republic of Texas. Text commences: "Government Bond, Payable to Holder.... The Republic of Texas Promises to Pay to Charles DeMorse Stock Commissioner or Order Five Hundred Dollars..." New Orleans: Endicott & Clark, [1840]. Vignette of a Native American warrior at center and man plowing at left, five-point star at center. All coupons present; triangular clip cancels. Fine, usual good thick rounded signature of Burnet.

Republic of Texas $500 bond at 8% interest, issued under the Act of February 5, 1840. Burnet (1788-1870) served as President of the Republic twice: Ad Interim President (March 17-October 22, 1836), and Acting President in 1841, during Lamar's illness. His involvement with the massive land fraud known as the Galveston Bay & Texas Land Company is well documented. Also signed by bondholder Charles DeMorse (1816-1887), stock commissioner under Mirabeau B. Lamar. DeMorse founded the Clarksville Northern Standard in 1842 and continued as its publisher and editor until his death. He helped in the organization of the Democratic Party in Texas and has been called the "Father of the Texas Democratic Press." Criswell 40B (check). Courtesy of Simpson Galleries, Houston. Consigned Lot. The high bid placed by via mail, fax, the Internet or telephone will be entered as the opening bid for the lot during the live portion of the silent auction.
