    Description

Braxton Bragg Autograph Letter Signed to his wife Elisa, dated at Houston, June 18, 1874. 4 pp., 12mo, ruled paper folder. Fine. Bragg writes regarding the great excitement in Houston about the possibility of making the first communication by sail with the Northwest, enthusiastically going into detail about the potential of Houston becoming a major artery of trade and travel, and how that will affect Galveston. Because of his engineering background, he discusses matters such as railroads, waterworks, ship channel, etc. He also describes in detail the countryside between Houston and Galveston, "It is a very dreary country from Galveston here, dead level, all prairie, except an occasional skirt of timber along ravines." A good letter from an important Confederate leader with visionary content on Houston at the moment when it was on the fast track to evolving into the super megalopolis it is today. Courtesy of Simpson Galleries, Houston. Consigned Lot. The high bid placed by via mail, fax, the Internet or telephone will be entered as the opening bid for the lot during the live portion of the silent auction.
