    Description

Benjamin Harrison: Mechanical Advertising Egg. One of the cleverest campaign items from the election of 1888 is the wooden egg with pop-up rooster. The egg measures 3" across and has advertising printed on the side which has mostly worn away. (We believe it may have said "French Clothiers. Elyria, O.") A brass cut-out rooster is inscribed, "I Crow For Harrison and..." It is mounted on a spring and can be pulled within the egg (aided by a string attached to the hook). When released, it pops up. Light rust on the rooster with minor chipping at bottom and one end of egg. Piece is in good condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
