    Description

Andrew Johnson Dinner Invitation. One page, 5" x 6", March 13, 1862. This is a rare dinner invitation during the Civil War from Johnson to G. Twitchell. In full: "The President of the United States and Mrs. Johnson Request the pleasure of Hon. G. & Mrs. Twitchell's Company to Dine on Tuesday next at 6 o'clock Mar. 13th 1862. An early Answer." Before the Civil War, Johnson had served as governor of Tennessee and later, until March 4, 1862 (nine days before this dinner), as a senator from Tennessee. Later in March, President Lincoln appointed Johnson, a devoted Unionist, military governor of occupied Tennessee. Before the Civil War was over, Johnson served as Lincoln's vice-president during his second term. After Lincoln's assassination, Johnson became the seventeenth president, the first to be impeached and acquitted. Johnson invitations are rare; this one, featuring an embossed "J" at the top, is fine.
