    Description

1916 Progressive Convention: The Convention Without a Nominee. This is a deluxe edition of the program for the "Second Progressive Convention Auditorium Chicago June 7, 1916." It is bound in brown suede with a gold-stamped figure of a bull moose and the name of the owner, Delegate Abner C. Harding of Illinois. It is held together with bronze-colored cord. The men who attended this convention hoped to convince Theodore Roosevelt to accept a second nomination of the party. Despite his dislike of Woodrow Wilson, Roosevelt demurred and the convention adjourned without choosing a nominee. They instead supported Republican Charles Evan Hughes. The booklet is in great shape. Suede covers were popular at the time for such souvenirs, but they typically dry out and disintegrate. This copy is mint. Several attendees of the 1912 convention are pictured throughout the book, including Oscar Straus (shown wearing a Roosevelt Hat-in-the-Ring badge) whose brother Isidor perished in the "Titanic" in 1912.
