Millard Fillmore Indian Peace Medal. Large Diameter, 76mm, struck in silver, edge plain. The obverse has a portrait profile of Fillmore beneath "Millard Fillmore President of the United States" and "1850" below. The obverse has an allegorical scene with a farmer and Indian in front of an American flag, plow, and axe between them in the near background, above, is the legend "Labor Virtue Honor". The Fillmore medal marked a change in reverse theme, from "Peace and Friendship" to this allegorical tableau. The obverse was designed by Salathiel Ellis. The reverse was designed by Joseph Wilson.

Indian Peace Medals were an important aspect of diplomacy during American expansion in the 18th and 19th centuries, often presented by military authorities to local leaders on behalf of the President of the United States. While many Peace Medal designs were later re-struck for collectors, often in bronze, the silver medals that were actually distributed are of great historical importance.
This silver Fillmore medal is holed for suspension and is in the largest and most desirable size. There is minimal light even wear. It has great color and a wonderful, rich patina. It is in a fitted, custom leather case. This medal was a gift to President Lyndon Johnson during his presidency.

A full 100% of the net proceeds will benefit the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at the University of Texas at Austin, in honor of the 2012 Centennial of Lady Bird Johnson's birth.
