William McKinley: Funeral Flag from Buffalo. 39" x 35" glazed cotton flag used, we believe, to cover the coffin of President McKinley following his death in Buffalo. A 6" x 2" fabric tag sewn onto the last stripe reads: "O honored Flag which touched the wounded/ enchanted remains of our President McKinley/ for history keep this memory You for all to see/ hung inside the hallowed hall of Orpheon/ O fiendish Czolgosz thy fate be sealed/ when at thy death none shall touch thee. P.M. Sept. 1901". Moderate, even aging with six holes across the top. It appears that sections of the flag, along the right side, were removed over time as keepsake souvenirs.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
