Rare 1836 James Madison Silk Memorial Ribbon
Actual campaign items for our fourth president are almost unobtainable, so this attractively designed funerary ribbon may serve as a reasonable substitute. In a half century of collecting, Joe Brown encountered no better such item. Even more impressively, it was purchased only a few years ago from the auction of the U.I. "Chick" Harris Collection, another legendary 50-year accumulation. It was the most representative item Harris was able to collect for this early president. The definitive reference book on political ribbons by Sullivan and Fischer, while it does include memorial ribbons for the early presidents, does not illustrate this or any other ribbon for Madison. Moderate overall "aging" and wear at the top do not detract seriously from the display appeal of this rare item. 2 3/4" x 5".
