McKinley & La Follette: Awesome and Unique Jugate Flag/Campaign Cane Combination. One of the joys of collecting political items is seeing items you've never seen before, least of all heard of. Such was the case, in spades, regarding this outstanding campaign artifact that promotes the re-election of William McKinley as President and Robert "Fighting Bob" La Follette (1855-1925) as Governor of Wisconsin in 1900. The "outward" object is a 33.5" cane with knob handle. The knob is connected to a stick that is hidden from view. Once the knob is pulled out, the stick is exposed. Attached to that stick is a "sight to behold"; namely, a 15" x 10" glazed or polished cotton flag, printed in red & blue, with oval portraits of "McKinley" and "Bob" beneath an eagle, shield, wreath and sunrise. There are some nicks in the wooden cane, but the flag is in mint condition. La Follette served in the U. S. House of Representatives from 1885 to 1891, during which time he became acquainted with Congressman McKinley of Ohio, both stalwart Republicans. Each won election in 1900. La Follette went on to the U. S. Senate in 1905 and was a leading presidential hopeful in 1908 and 1912. In 1925, he ran as a Third Party candidate on the Progressive Ticket. We are honored to be able to offer this "treasure".
