Massachusetts Spy: Or, the Worchester Gazette Newspaper: Full Transcription of George Washington's State of the Union Address. Massachusetts Spy newspaper with the full transcription of President George Washington's State of the Union address to Congress on November 19, 1794. Fascinating coverage begins with Washington's thoughts on the Whiskey Rebellion that had recently ended, but not before violence erupted in an attempt to avoid an excise tax on liquor. Address reads in part, "When we call to mind the gracious indulgence of Heaven, by which the American people became a nation...and look forward to the riches, power, and happiness to which it seems destined; with the deepest regret do I announce to you, that during your recess, some of the citizens of the United States have been found capable of an insurrection...the artifice of men...produced symptoms of riot and violence..." Signed "G. Washington" in type at conclusion. Newspaper is dated December 3, 1794, with Washington's address filling the entire first page and part of the second page. Additional coverage concerns US-French relations after the Reign of Terror recently ended in France, reading "The Convention having decreed that the flags of the French and American Republics should be united and fly together in the Hall of its fittings, in testimony of the union and friendship..." and then signed in type, "James Munroe," U.S. Minister to France. Newspaper runs 4pp. and measures 11.25" x 18.25". Some toning and single fold, but overall fine condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
