Mary Todd Lincoln: Personal China. Soft-paste cup & saucer decorated in pink & gold with a Greek key pattern. The cup has a large letter "L" on the front. The underside of the cup is marked "China Hall Philadelphia Kerr". The cup is 3.5" across and the saucer is 5.5" across. While Mrs. Lincoln was still in the White House, she ordered a set of china from J. K. Kerr, known as the "buff & gold" set. These were delivered shortly before the President's assassination and may have seen limited use in the White House. Mrs. Lincoln then ordered some supplemental pieces from Kerr. Given the similarity of the design, this cup & saucer may have been part of the supplemental order. It is identical to a set of two cups & saucers from the Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith Estate sold some years back in Cincinnati. Many of the pieces in the Beckwith Estate traced back to Abraham & Mary Todd Lincoln and had passed to Robert Todd Lincoln and his wife, Mary Harlan. Excellent condition. A Letter of Provenance from Hildene custodian and Lincoln scholar James T. Hickey accompanies the lot. He gives a history of the china ordered by Mrs. Lincoln in 1865 and concludes: "This is one of the coffee cups and saucers from Mrs. Lincoln's personal set. From a few remaining pieces of the set found by me at Robert T. Lincoln's home Hildene Manchester Vermont in 1977."
