Martin Van Buren: The Rarest Variety of "Subtreasury" Sulfide. One of the prize pre-1896 items in the Berman Collection. This sought-after variety has the words "Van Buren Democracy" in addition to "Subtreasury." In front of the strongbox is a guard dog, chained to the lock, and lying down but alert- apparently a reference to the old adage, "Let sleeping dogs lie." It is listed by DeWitt/ Sullivan as MVB 1840-13, but no example was available to them to picture. This is the first we can recall being offered for sale. Choice condition, with replaced pin on reverse. There is a hint of separation of the black paint from the glass, almost always seen on these sulfides due to moisture, but it is minimal and there is no flaking of the paint. Impressive large 24 mm x 28 mm size.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
