    Description

Martin Van Buren: 1838 Cartoon. The presidential hopefuls for the election of 1840 are shown riding their hobby horses in this 17.5" x 10" lithographed cartoon by H. R. Robinson titled: "All On Hobbies, Gee Up, Gee Ho!" It qualifies as the earliest "hobby horse" item in the hobby! Van Buren appears in the lead position, followed by Thomas Hart Benton, Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, John C. Calhoun, William Wirt and James G. Birney. Incumbent Van Buren, on the Sub-Treasury nag, exclaims: "Hurrah! for my old Hickory nag! rough and tough goes ahead yet!" The print has been trimmed, as shown, and has two small border tears, some light abrasions and the addition of a strip of replacement border on the bottom. It is the only example we have encountered and has a lot going for it, despite the faults.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
