    Description

Lincoln & Johnson: 1865 Inauguration Ball Invitation.
7 1/2" x 10 1/2" engraved invitation on stock for the "National Inauguration Ball. March 4th 1865." It features jugate portraits of Lincoln & Johnson and various inscriptions and symbols related to the nation's military struggles. It is the best designed of all such invitations. Most examples are not inscribed with the name of the invitee. We suspect the reason for this is that the date on the invitation is incorrect. The ball normally would have been held on the evening of Saturday the 4th, but was postponed for weather reasons and did not take place until Monday the 6th. This one is inscribed to Mrs. S. J. Butterfield. Evenly toned, light damp stain along bottom right corner, small piece to top right corner missing, good condition overall.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
