    Description

Lincoln & Hamlin: Spectacular Example of the Largest Size of 1860 "Doughnut" Ferrotype. These "doughnut" ferros, so named because of their bulbous hollow frames, were produced in five sizes for all four 1860 presidential candidates. Not surprisingly, the Lincoln varieties are the most sought-after, especially in this 47 mm size. Their rarity is such that, of the four candidates, DeWitt/ Sullivan pictured only the Breckinridge in this size.

The Lincoln version comes in several forms, and the example offered here is the most desirable with his name in bold letters around the portrait and a star above. The photo closely resembles the famous "Cooper Union" image by Brady, and indeed it was taken by him on that same occasion. Condition on the present example is simply stunning. The ferrotype surface on both sides are smooth and flawless, and the emulsion on the Lincoln side has an almost luminous quality. Present is the rarely-seen original suspension loop at the top. As is nearly always the case with these doughnuts, the silvering on the copper shell frame shows some even toning, but that is the only "defect" which prevents us stating the piece is in mint condition. If a finer example exists, we cannot think of it.

The Merrill Berman Collection boasted a very fine example which sold for $16,250 in our February 2015 auction. As beautiful as that specimen was, the Frent piece is superior and presents an exceptional opportunity for the advanced collector or investor to obtain the "best of the best". Pictured in Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.'s Running for President: The Candidates and Their Images. 1789-1896. Please note that the matching examples for the other three 1860 candidates are also offered in this auction.
