    Description

Lincoln & Johnson: Sought-after "Gault Frame" 1864 Campaign Ferrotype. Large-sized, attractive, and very distinctive brass frames have made this variety a collector favorite. Also made for the other 1864 candidates, McClellan and Fremont, it uses a frame style originally developed for encased postage stamps, which traded in place of coins during the Civil War period. This is a choice, problem-free example, distinctively superior to the plate specimen in the DeWitt/ Sullivan book (AL 1864-94). Diameter 25mm. From the Merrill C. Berman Collection.
