Lewis Payne: Rare CDV Of A Lincoln Assassination Conspirator! On the night of April 14, 1865, the plan to assassinate President Lincoln was coming to fruition. While John Wilkes Booth waited for his opportunity to end the life of President Lincoln at Ford's Theater, Lewis Payne was tasked with assassinating Secretary of State William Seward. Seward was bed ridden from a carriage accident, so he was no match for Payne as he stormed his house, and made his way up to Seward's bedroom. Even with the help of family members, they could not contain the 6 foot tall 200 pound former Confederate. As he rushed Seward's bed he began slashing at his neck screaming "I'm Mad I'm Mad!" After the attack subsided Payne rushed from the house, and into the darkness of the Washington, DC night. Seward was quite lucky, albeit he did sustain a terrible wound to his right cheek. His life was spared by having a metal brace around his neck area due to the carriage accident he was in, this brace deflected many of the advances Payne made with his huge Bowie knife. This image, originally taken by Alexander Gardner, is a fine retouched example, have nice detail and tone. There are similar vignette examples known of the other Conspirators as well.. An excellent example.
