DescriptionLarge "Free Men" 1855 Broadside. This graphically pleasing broadside advertises a grand rally of the "American Republicans/ This Evening, on Bates House Corner." The piece commands, "'Young America'/ Rally to the rescue of our country from the desolating and ravaging step of the Alien Invaders!" Printed by the Daily Evening Republican, as can be seen at the bottom right corner, the date and location of Indianapolis, May 30, 1855, is printed at the bottom left. Housed in a large black frame with gold-colored inset, the overall size of this piece is 32.625" x 45.625" with a sight size of 27.75" x 40.375. Although not examined outside of the frame, it appears the broadside was backed to material at some time, possibly linen. Light foxing is visible at the right edge with minor creasing throughout. Some loss is apparent from the left corner and center of the top edge (a portion of the original paper detached but present), with minor loss at the depiction of the eagle and a few more spots below. Overall, this example is in lovely condition, the print still bold and dark, and the margins nice and wide.
