John Quincy Adams: Signet Watch Fob. 7/8" x 1 1/8" two-sided intaglio-carved stone in an oval 14kt. gold mount, serving dual purposes: watch fob and seal. One side has the monogram "JQA" in reverse in an oval reserve (hanging pendant design with bowknot above). The other side has the Arms of Boylston seal, as used by John Adams. Contrary to British usage, American heraldic custom adopted arms descended in the female line, rather than from father to son. The shield used here is that favored by John Adam's mother, Susanna Boylston Adams. This seal was used by John Quincy Adams upon the Treaty of Ghent in 1814. The stone is a variegated brown and light amber color. It is accompanied by an old envelope inscribed "John Q. Adams watch fob."
Ex: Skinner, Inc., Sale 2618B (10/2012), lot 192, where it was noted that this watch fob descended through the Adams family, and consigned by a fourth great grandchild of John Q. Adams.
