    Description

John Quincy Adams: Profoundly Rare "Pewter Rim" from the 1828 Election. Few categories of political collectibles are more sought-after and valued than these small plaques made for most prominent political figures from the second quarter of the 19th century, Some, like this one, come with a mirror on verso, although other varieties carried a portrait of the Vice President or running mate. Most were issued with suspension loops at the top, present here but absent on most pewter rims, which could be used to hang the small plaques or for wearing as a badge.

In this pewter rim series, the ultimate prize is this John Quincy Adams variety. It matches a Jackson, of which several are known, but this is one of only two known for Adams. The other example, present whereabouts unknown, was published from a poor photograph rather than the actual object by J. Doyle DeWitt in his definitive reference work. The example offered here was originally in the George S. McKearin collection, and subsequently passed to another legendary collector, Kenton Broyles. The Frents obtained it directly from Broyles many years ago.

Campaign items of any kind for John Quincy Adams are very rare, and this ultimate example, in superb condition, must rank as one of the premier offerings in the Frent Collection. Barring the discovery of a previously unreported example (unlikely, as none have surfaced in over five decades), this may be a literally once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the advanced collector to obtain one of the iconic objects in the genre of political campaign memorabilia. Diameter 2.5". Pictured in Running for President, 1789-1896, edited by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., page 117. For strictest accuracy we note a very minor light water stain toward the bottom which is much exaggerated in the book photograph.
