John Hancock: Massachusetts Gubernatorial Broadside. 8" x 9 5/8" broadside or handbill issued to promote the election of John Hancock as Governor of Massachusetts in 1787. It criticizes Hancock's opponent, James Bowdoin, for his inept and overly forceful suppression of Shays' Rebellion. It smears him and his supporters with the label of Tories, or British sympathizers. "... unless you mean to rivet your chains, spurn the proferred VOTES of those who are their weak or wicked instruments... Mr. Hancock is well, able and willing to serve you, and he can have no enemies, but the enemies of America." Printed on laid paper, even toning, vintage rice paper repairs/reinforcements to folds on verso. Docketed, in part: "Delivered to me by Winslow Warren, son of Genl. Warren of Plymouth."
