John F. Kennedy: Presidential Seal Blazer Buttons, 14K Gold. Eight 14K gold buttons, .75" (4) and .5" (4). Four small and four large finely-crafted 14K gold buttons engraved with the presidential seal and worn by President Kennedy. The smaller buttons are still attached to the original blue fabric of the sleeves of one of the president's discarded blazers. Included are two original-color photographs taken by Cecil Stoughton, White House photographer (stamped on back), showing President Kennedy wearing a similar jacket with gold buttons. With the president in one of the photographs are Stanislaw Radziwill, the president's brother-in-law, and JFK's friend Charles Spalding. In the other, with JFK are Radziwill and Secret Service Agent Clint Hill, who on November 22, 1963, seconds after the shots were fired, jumped into the presidential limousine and shielded the president and Mrs. Kennedy with his own body. In the photographs, the president's guests are wearing mock awards for the Sunshine Highway 50-Mile Walk. President Kennedy happened across a 1908 executive order by President Theodore Roosevelt requiring Marine officers to complete a 50-mile hike. JFK put his own staff to the test, and made paper awards for those who finished, including one for Agent Hill that read, "For Dazzle. February 23, 1963. The Order of the Pace Maker. He whom the Secret Service will follow into the Battle of the Sunshine Highway. John F. Kennedy." The president drew the presidential seal on the medal to make it "official." Kenneth O'Donnell, President Kennedy's Appointment Secretary, gave these buttons to Martin Underwood, Special Assistant to the President. Letter of authenticity from Mr. Underwood. Excellent condition. From the Robert L. White Collection.

From the collection of Dr. Dean Rudoy.
