John C. Frémont: Very Rare 1864-Dated Back-to-Back Ferrotype. JF-1864-6, 26mm gilt brass shell. An especially desirable variety as it can be mated with Lincoln and McClellan versions. The McClellan version, far less rare, has sold for over $2500 at auction. This example exhibits some in-painting or areas of touch-up, most notably on the Cochrane side in the left field (obscuring one star). That said, the portraits are bold with good contrast and in sharp focus. The appearance to "the naked eye" is excellent. We are aware of only four specimens extant (DeWitt Collection, John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Merrill Berman Collection and this example). It is superior to the DeWitt and Ford examples.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
