John C. Frémont: Fabulous 1856 Portrait Campaign Flag. 16.5" x 12" glazed or polished cotton flag featuring a bold portrait of the 1856 Republican, inscribed "Freedom's Candidates. For President John C. Fremont. Vice President, Wm. L. Dayton." There are thirteen stars in the canton. Scattered loss at the top, one small hole next to the "F" in "For" and light soiling towards the right side. The colors are strong. A very significant piece. We estimate no more than six Frémont portrait flags still extant and that might be optimistic. This was just recently acquired by our consignor from a collector who had possession for thirty years. Once somebody gets one of these, they tend to hold onto them! By a stroke of luck, we are offering the Buchanan mate in this sale.
