James A. Garfield: Inauguration Photograph. 9" x 7" tinted albumen photograph on the original 14" x 10" mount, titled "Washington City, D.C." It depicts spectators at the Capitol, assembled in a reviewing stand while a parade passes beneath a triumphal arch. The back side has the name of the owner, identifying the scene as "President Garfield Inauguration, March 4, 1881" with the added comments: "My father while driving by the station in Washington, D.C. in his carriage with his driver, heard the shot. Father was a personal friend of President Garfield." Slight waviness to board.

The first known photograph taken at a presidential inauguration was the 1856 swearing-in ceremony of James Buchanan. Distant perspectives showing crowds at the outdoor ceremonies at the U.S. Capitol of the two inaugurations of Lincoln and Grant, as well as that of Hayes were also photographed, but it is not until the 1881 Inauguration of James Garfield that any other photographic images of the events held in conjunction with the festivities were known to be taken. There is one image of Garfield reviewing the Inaugural parade with his immediate predecessor Hayes, but this image is the only known one of the grand Inaugural Parade Arch, showing the considerable preparations being undertaken in the city by the Joint Congressional Committee for the increasingly institutionalized national event. It is unpublished and comes with documentation of a letter confirming details of the scene from a Smithsonian Institution curator to the original owner.
