George Washington: Unlisted Inaugural Button. 30 mm. (1 1/4") brass clothing button with applied shank, depicting a displayed eagle beneath a sunburst, encircled by a ring of randomly-spaced chevron-shaped punch marks. The design is struck and the button is typical of colonial-era buttons. The decorative punch marks were applied by hand after the eagle design and overlap the tips of its wings and its talons. The eagle and sunburst matches that seen on the "Memorable Era" pattern GW button. We do not know if the maker of this button took a "Memorable Era" GW, removed the outer inscription and added the punch marks, or if he simply produced a new design, a variation on one he was familiar with. It is slightly smaller than the standard GW (34 mm.), but we can see no underlying wording around the perimeter. Although some of the buttons depicted in Albert's 1949 work were discredited and expunged from his revised work (and even some of those from the 1966 edition have questionable attribution), we are of the firm belief that this is, in fact, a legitimate George Washington inaugural button, unlisted, and of the period. Outside of a slight vertical depression, or worn area, in the middle, it is in pristine condition with a beautiful orange patina.
