    Description

George Washington: Pater Patriæ... the Holy Grail of GW Inaugural Buttons.
Albert WI-19B, DeWitt GW-1789-41, 25 mm copper shell with lead-filled back. Half-length military bust of Washington facing one-quarter left or dexter. It is inscribed "General Washington Pater Patriæ". This is the only portrait button in the accepted canon of George Washington inaugural buttons and has always been at the top of the want list for anyone interested in the period. It may also be the earliest artifact that refers to Washington as the "Father of His Country". Original shank. Light pitting and surface scratches. The surface is ever-so-slightly convex resulting in wear to the portrait. The rest of the button exhibits light to moderate wear. Pleasing copper patina. There are probably no more than ten of these in existence. We sold our first example in November 2015. The Frent Collection contained another example, considered the finest known, which we sold in February 2018 for a record $225,000.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
