DescriptionGeorge Washington: Inaugural Brass Clothing Button: A Stunning Example of the 1789-dated "Memorable Era" Variety. A cardinal rule of lot description is to avoid language which is TOO effusive. However, in this case we must toss aside the rule book! Not only is this the finest example of this popular variety we have encountered-it is the finest GW button of ANY variety we've ever seen! If GWs were graded by the professional grading services, this one would surely be ranked in the high 60s. It is pristine, with original reflective surfaces and uniformly strong strike. Some examples of these buttons came with gilding in the incised lettering, usually found partially if not mostly worn away. Here the gilding in the letters and eagle is 100% complete, and magnificent to behold. The reverse side is equally nice, with original shank of course. Diameter 34 mm.
A perhaps never-to-be-repeated opportunity to own the "best of the best," a glorious example of one of the most collectable categories of Washington artifacts.
