    Description

George Washington: Federal Hall Flag Fragment from First Inauguration. 1" x 3" piece of the silk flag that was displayed above George Washington as he took the oath of office on the balcony of Federal Hall in New York City on April 30, 1789. The relic, originally red in color, is now a golden brown. It is affixed with sealing wax to a letter of provenance (complete, but split in two). The original flag was retained by the 2nd Regiment New York State Artillery, but became so deteriorated that, by the 1840's, it was decided to cut it up to distribute as souvenirs. The note reads, in full: "a piece of the flag which was held over the head of General Washington when he was first inaugurated President of the United States, now in possession of the Common Council of this city [New York] - formerly the property of the 2nd Regiment N.Y.S.A. Taken from said flag when it was under control of Col. Town by C. H. Town Jany. 1844." Accompanied by a letter of a former owner, Charles M. Williams, who purchased it at auction and had it displayed in his Cincinnati home with like material.
