Horace Greeley: The Iconic Greeley Quill Pen Ferrotype. "The Pen is Mightier than the Sword" in Raised Letters on the Feather's Shaft. No campaign ferrotype is more highly prized by collectors than this one, representative of Greeley's career as one of the greatest American journalists. Only several are known, and the only other example we have ever handled appeared in in 2001 in Part VI of the legendary U. I. "Chick" Harris auction series, where it sold for $20,734.50-one of the highest prices achieved in that auction series.

The present example was purchased by Merrill Berman in the equally legendary John Ford Collection auction, where it sold for $15,275. Condition is choice, with an utterly trivial edge chipping on the right side of the ferrotype portion. Size: 20mm x 82 mm. Original pin on verso.

Merrill Berman had to wait nearly 50 years for a chance to acquire this ultimate rarity, and even though he had not been adding to the collection actively for many years, it was an opportunity he felt he could not allow to pass him by. Serious collectors of 19th century campaign items should share his conclusion.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
