Henry Clay: A Striking 1844 Campaign Flag Banner. These rare 19th century banners in flag format are considered by many to be the "Aristocrats" of political display items, and small wonder. The bold design and strong colors make quite a statement. This variety is listed by Herb Collins in Threads of History as number 179 on p. 117, and the present example seems in nicer overall condition than the plate specimen in that definitive reference work. A size of 23.5" x 25" and exceptionally strong red color of the stripes, usually faded on flags of this era. Several very small holes and small brown marks on one of the stripes are noted for accuracy, but detract minimally, if at all. Minor damage to the upper and lower left corners. A great early political display piece.
