Harry Truman: White House Desk Set. Presented to Melvon O Carter, general foreman of the White House maintenance crew by President Harry S. Truman, the desk set measures 12" x 5.25". The base is wood removed from the White House in the 1950 renovation and is so marked with a small brass plaque bearing the Seal of the President. The desk set has two Parker ballpoint pens mounted on the wood base and a glass ashtray in the center. Underneath the ashtray is the Seal of the President on gold foil. The red felt on the bottom of the base is marked "H.S.T.". A typed letter describing the piece and recounting the circumstances leading to its presentation by President Truman accompanies the desk set. The letter is dated April 20, 1982 and signed by Mrs. Melvon O. Carter. The set is in excellent condition.
