    Hand-Colored Engraving of John Adams

Hand-colored period engraving of John Adams in period frame. The engraving, 4 3/4" x 7," has an eagle, liberty cap, cornucopia and portrait of Adams, facing left, in an oval. The gilt frame measures 9" x 12." The engraving is inscribed "John Adams. Success to America." This slogan was used on Liverpool pitchers dating from the 1790s and helps to date this rare political graphic. The backing board has the original label of "Williams & Everett" of Boston, a fact that greatly enhances the value and provides crossover appeal to collectors of American furniture and fine arts. The portrait of Adams rests on steps labeled "Law Order Justice." Colors used are yellow and blue. Contemporary material for Adams is very rare, especially considering his lack of popularity and short term in office. This is a handsome display piece of the period which one would expect to see hanging in the parlors of well-to-do New England Federalists.
