    Description

Grant & Wilson: Impressive Shadow-Box Display. This is certainly one of the best display pieces issued for the 1872 campaign. Copper three-dimensional busts of Washington, Lincoln, Grant and Wilson are mounted on velvet ground, within plain brass frames. This all against an oval steel plate elaborately engraved with designs and campaign slogans. The piece was copyrighted August 2, 1872 and produced by R. H. Norris of Paterson, New Jersey. The oval engraved plaque measures 9" x 11" and is recessed with a mahogany liner or spandrel with gold stamped designs. The frame is 16" x 18". In referring to the 1868 election, it states: "As We Did in '68, So We Will Do in '72." It quotes Grant's opponent in 1872, Horace Greeley, with something he wished he had never said: "Genl. Grant has never been defeated and never will be." These rarely show up at auction. Outside of some streaks of tarnish, concentrated primarily on the far right, it is a very fine example.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
