Grant & Colfax: Wonderful Jugate Tin & Glass Parade Lantern on Original Pole. 5" x 5" x 6.5" lantern featuring a panel with a paper insert showing the 1868 Republican nominees, surrounded by a decorative border, printed in red & blue. The other three glass panels are clear, one of which has a lateral crack. Normal surface rust to the metal frame. Attached to the original 48" wooden pole. measures 59" in height overall. The insert has some damp stains, some minor loss and a handful of smaller stains which do not materially affect the portraits which remain bold and unfaded. Tin & glass lanterns, as a collecting category, rank right up there with flags, but far surpass flags in rarity. Counting this example, we can think of only nineteen such lanterns extant (nine Lincoln, three Bell, three McClellan, three Grant and one Cleveland). The other Grant examples are both non-pictorial, with painted or stenciled names. Given their delicate nature, it is amazing that any have survived.
