    Description

George Washington: Superb 1849-Dated Oil Portrait After Gilbert Stuart. In excellent condition, never relined, and still on the original wood stretcher and in the original gold leafed (interior) frame. Lettered on verso of canvas: "Washington on Worchester Heights, Mass. March 15, 1776. British Evacuation of Boston, From Stuart by I.A. Wetherby, Sept. 1849." Isaac Augustus Wetherby (1819-1904) is a known Massachusetts artist, who painted other portraits of prominent personages in the mid-nineteenth century. A lovely painting ingeniously set into a larger, modern frame to maximize its display impact. 17.5" x 24", 27" x 33.5" as framed.
