    Description

George Washington: Pair of Colorful Engravings Under Glass. Two engravings, each 14.5" x 10.5", housed in lemon gilt frames, published in London in 1804. These are quite attractive and were only made for a brief time. As far as we can tell, they consist of hand-colored engravings which were affixed to the underside of a glass plate, perhaps after being soaked in shellac or varnish. One example shows personifications of "Asia" and "Africa". A lake and waterfall separates the two continents. The other example shows "Europe" and America", separated by the Atlantic Ocean. "America" holds a thirteen-star flag. A young African boy sits at her feet reading a book (an idealistic, but inaccurate assertion that the African would benefit from his servitude and be given the benefits of civilization). A snake slithers on the ground. A monument to "Geor. Washington" with dates of birth and death appears on the right. Some flaking or loss to the mauve-colored dress worn by "America"; otherwise, both are in excellent condition.
