    Description

George Washington: "Liberty Cap with Date" Inaugural Button. WI-27, 33 mm silvered brass, original shank. This is listed under "Unauthenticated Specimens" in the 1976 edition of Albert's book. The design is engraved. While the button may have some connection to the French Revolution which, like Washington's inauguration, occurred in 1789, it appears to be an American product of the colonial period. Given the date, the liberty cap, size and beveled edge (matching the "Plain Roman" inaugural button), we feel it deserves a place in the canon of GW buttons. Retains nearly all of the silvering. A very rare piece in outstanding condition. From the Brook Mahoney Collection of George Washington Inaugural Buttons.
